Multi-hole residential short-game academy with sand bunkers and tournament flags, built by Surface Evolution

Residential Short-Game Architecture

PGA-Caliber Short Game Facilities. Engineered for the Dedicated Golfer.

Surface Evolution designs and constructs elite, residential short-game facilities across Central Iowa — replicating the exact ball speeds, check-and-release mechanics, and structural foundations of the region's premier private country clubs.

The Engineering Standard

Most installers lay turf. We build the ground beneath it.

A short-game complex is a civil structure first and a playing surface second. What separates a Surface Evolution build from a landscaping crew's afternoon is everything you will never see — the base, the drainage, and the geotextile engineering that hold tournament response for a decade. The three standards below are non-negotiable on every estate we touch.

01

The Iowa Freeze-Thaw Shield

Central Iowa cycles through dozens of freeze-and-thaw events every season. Surfaces laid on loose fill heave, dip, and wrinkle by spring. We excavate to grade and construct multi-tiered, mechanically compacted limestone bases — engineered in lifts and tested for density — so the green sits dead-flat and dead-true through every Midwestern winter.

02

Cellular Shock-Absorption

A wedge shot lands with real velocity, and the surface has to answer like earth — not like a gym mat. We engineer our foundations to absorb high-velocity impacts and evacuate water instantly. By utilizing multi-tiered compacted limestone and available UltraBase cellular panel technology, we deliver authentic check-and-release mechanics trusted by professional short-game complexes.

03

Precision Roll & Grain Control

A practice green is worthless if the ball breaks differently depending on where you stand. Our flagship builds specify premium, non-directional nylon fibers that roll perfectly true from every angle and hold their geometry under heavy traffic—elevating your surface far beyond standard residential turf.

Three Master Builds

Select the standard your game demands.

Every estate green is custom-engineered to the contours of your property. These three master specifications define the structural foundation, fiber system, and short-game intent of your build.

The Execution Standard

Six stages. No shortcuts.

Precision is a sequence, not a promise. Every build moves through the same uncompromising six-stage build — each stage verified before the next begins.

01

811 Clearance & Spray-Out

Every build opens with full utility clearance and an on-site spray-out — the site is mapped and marked to the inch before a single blade of sod is lifted.

02

Structural Excavation

We excavate to engineered depth and remove the unstable native soil that causes consumer-grade installs to fail — creating a clean, surveyed cavity for the structural base.

03

Geotextile & Sub-Base Engineering

Commercial-grade geotextile separation fabric is laid, then multi-tiered compacted limestone is built in lifts and laser-graded — the freeze-thaw shield and drainage spine of the facility.

04

Turf Tailoring & Zippering Seams

The nylon system is hand-tailored to the contours and zippered at the seams — an invisible, fully bonded joint that eliminates the visible lines and lifting edges of amateur work.

05

Envirofill Tuning & Stimpmeter Testing

Antimicrobial infill is metered and brushed to dial the surface to your target green speed, then verified with a Stimpmeter until the roll reads true and consistent across the complex.

06

The Unveil

The site is detailed, the surroundings restored, and your estate green is handed over — calibrated, documented, and ready for the first wedge shot of the next decade.
